On the night of July 12, 2023, the village of Juhudi in Kenya’s Lamu County, a predominantly Christian community, experienced a brutal attack. Maina Kariuki Githiga and his neighbors were forced to flee as their homes were set ablaze and livestock stolen. Maina narrowly escaped the violence as al-Shabab militants, affiliated with al-Qaida, targeted the village.
Maina’s wife and children were fortunate to be at an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp during the attack, but their homestead was severely damaged, with two of their houses destroyed. This assault was part of a series of attacks aimed at the Lamu region, which is close to Somalia and has been increasingly targeted by al-Shabab in its efforts to impose its ideology.
When International Christian Concern (ICC) learned about Maina’s plight, they stepped in to offer crucial support. Thanks to the generosity of donors, ICC provided immediate assistance and laid the groundwork for long-term recovery for Maina and his family.
ICC arranged for the family’s relocation to a rental home, where they can now “sleep well, eat well, and live without the fear of being attacked,” as Maina expressed. Essential items such as beds and groceries were also provided.
In addition, ICC helped Maina start a small business by supplying him with a motorbike, enabling him to work towards financial independence. Maina’s wife, a skilled tailor, received funds to open a sewing shop, offering a new source of income for the family.
“Today, we thank the Lord for how He has been taking care of us,” Maina said. “Thank you so much, ICC, for caring for us.”
