Renowned Ghanaian preacher and founder of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has issued a stern warning to popular pastor and founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Dr. Mensa Otabil, over what he described as “inaccurate teachings.”
In an impassioned sermon delivered during a church service on Sunday, Owusu-Bempah cautioned Otabil against the potential harm of distorting biblical doctrines, particularly in a way that could lead to division among Christian believers.
“Nobody has the right to collapse another person’s church with inaccurate teachings,” Owusu-Bempah declared, addressing his congregation. “We are all stewards of the gospel, and we must handle it with care. If your teachings are misleading, it could have far-reaching consequences for souls and entire congregations.”
Owusu-Bempah’s comments come after a series of controversial remarks made by Dr. Otabil during a recent sermon, where the ICGC founder was accused by some of his followers of challenging traditional Christian teachings, including certain aspects of prosperity theology.
While Otabil has not publicly responded to Owusu-Bempah’s warning, observers believe the remarks have sparked a wider debate within the Ghanaian church community about the boundaries of doctrinal differences and the responsibility of religious leaders in guiding their followers.
Tensions Between Church Leaders
Owusu-Bempah’s remarks are not the first time he has publicly called out other religious figures. The outspoken pastor is known for his bold statements on doctrinal issues, often positioning himself as a defender of conservative Christian values in Ghana. Meanwhile, Otabil, who has long been one of the country’s most respected figures in the evangelical movement, has been praised for his deep theological insights and teachings on leadership and faith.
Despite their differences in approach, both leaders maintain a significant following across the nation, with Owusu-Bempah leading a rapidly growing congregation in Accra, and Otabil’s ICGC being one of the largest and most influential Pentecostal churches in West Africa.
A Call for Unity and Discernment
In his message, Owusu-Bempah urged Christians to remain discerning in their spiritual journeys and not to accept every teaching without first measuring it against the word of God. “We must be vigilant and ensure that what is preached is truth, not just what feels good,” he emphasized.
As the debate over the direction of Christian teachings in Ghana continues to evolve, many church members are left questioning the role of religious leaders in maintaining doctrinal purity and the broader implications for church unity.
With growing tensions between some of the country’s most prominent church leaders, it remains to be seen whether this public exchange will lead to a deeper theological divide or spark a call for greater dialogue among the nation’s Christian community.
