Pastor Criticizes Gospel Artistes Without Church Affiliation, Compares Them to Secular Musicians

In a fiery sermon delivered during a Sunday service, a Nigerian pastor stirred controversy by claiming that gospel music ministers who are not actively affiliated with a local church are no different from popular secular artists like Davido and Wizkid.

Addressing his congregation, the pastor stated:
“Any gospel music minister who is not a member of any church is just a hip-hop artiste. He or she is not different from Davido and Wizkid โ€” worldly artistes who are not winning souls for God and are only interested in the money.”

The statement has sparked reactions both within and outside the Christian community, as many interpret the remarks as a critique of gospel artistes who operate independently or commercially without strong ties to religious institutions.

While some church members applauded the pastorโ€™s call for spiritual accountability and alignment with church doctrines, critics argue that the comparison oversimplifies the motivations of gospel musicians and undermines those who see their music as a form of ministry beyond traditional structures.

So far, neither Davido nor Wizkid has responded to the comments. However, the debate has reignited longstanding discussions about the role of the church in defining gospel music and the balance between spiritual calling and commercial success.
